Abstract

Modulation-induced mode partition (MIMP) has been studied in buried-heterostructure distributed feedback lasers. The origin of MIMP is ascribed to the transient carrier N changes and resulting index n variations during turn-on. The results suggest that clamping of the carrier level and a small dn/dN are essential in suppressing MIMP. Data indicate that negative detuning is also effective in suppressing MIMP. For device screening, the experiments show that low laser microwave noise and low transient chirp are useful indicators for relaxation oscillation damping.
