Abstract
Ciprofloxacin is a new quinolone antibiotic notable for potent oral activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria. It has the potential to significantly alter the treatment of infections that currently require intravenous antibiotics. Oral ciprofloxacin has been used successfully in the treatment of bronchitis, pneumonia, skin ulcers, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, osteomyelitis, and other serious infections. Oral treatment of these infections may allow for early hospital discharge, with appropriate monitoring. Home health care programs may find a diminishing need for intravenous antibiotics supplanted by a new demand for assuring compliance.
