Obesity-Hypoventilation in Childhood

Data obtained in the evaluation of seven children diagnosed with obesity-hypoventilation are examined. The classic features of this syndrome are reviewed and found to be indicative of late disease. Reliance upon these features may lead to underdiagnosis. New diagnostic criteria, allowing for earlier recognition, are proposed. Consideration is also given to the identification of exogenous and endogenous subtypes of the disorder, based on distinguishing clinical features. A comprehensive approach to management of this disorder is presented.
