Abstract
A particle-hole irreducible effective interaction is constructed from results of a microscopic, correlated-basis-functions description of homogeneous nuclear matter. This force is used to determine the excited states of 16O within a translationally-in-variant correlated random-phase-approximation. An analogous treatment of 40Ca is given at the Tamm-Dancoff level. Aside from 0- states which lie too low because the τ1·τ2S12 tensor component of the force is somewhat too strong, the calculated spectra are in reasonable accord with experiment.
