Abstract
In Oct. 2000, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved funding for 28 new proposals that employed fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, ten of which were for bridge decks. This purpose of this paper is to share New York State's experience with this type of bridge rehabilitation project, some funded with IBRC funds, others with discretionary state funds. Over the past few years, the NYS Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has installed five lightweight FRP decks. Four more are in various phases of project development. The DOT has gained invaluable expertise that will be useful to others attempting such a project. A summary is presented from the "owners" perspective, the typical transportation agency that is directly responsible to the end customer, the taxpayers and road users.
