Abstract
A simple model for corequakes and crustquakes of neutron stars is developed which allows one to compute the (maximal possible) changes in the moments of inertia. Applied to recent semirealistic neutron star models, our results show that the large speed-ups observed twice in the Vela pulsar can (on inertial grounds) be related to both corequakes and crustquakes. The gravitational energy stored in the deformed core would be larger than the energy stored in the rotation of a young (103 to 104 years old) pulsar.
