Abstract

In concrete-steel composite construction, there is some ambiguity and confusion in the determination of whether girders are composite or noncomposite if only grouped shear studs are provided at contra-flexure points instead of distributing them longitudinally throughout the negative moment region. In this paper, ultimate behavior of two types of composite construction are compared based on analytical and experimental investigations: girders with distributed shear studs and girders with studs grouped at the contra-flexure points. Two half-scaled subassemblage specimens of the negative moment region from a two-span continuous bridge have been load-tested in the laboratory. The behavior up through ultimate strength of the grouped studs specimen does not show much difference from that of the specimen having distributed studs, which indicates the existence of substantial composite action in the grouped studs construction. Accompanying finite element analysis also exhibits similar behavior between the two specimens.
