Abstract
Measurements of temperature and two components of velocity were taken in a hot air turbulent plume using a hot wire anemometer system. Profiles of mean fluctuating velocity and temperature, including Reynolds stress and turbulent heat flux, are presented. The measurements are shown to satisfy the constraints imposed by the mean momentum and energy equations in differential form. The plume was generated by electrically heating air and discharging it through a 2 one-half -in. vertical nozzle. The exit Froude number was near unity, resulting in a quick transition to a fully developed plume. The experiment was controlled by an on-line minicomputer system capable of traversing the probe, taking the data, and analyzing the results.
