Abstract

A mathematical model capable of relating the diffusion of the solute molecules in a polymer tablet and the concurrent erosion of the polymer matrix resulting in solute release was developed to understand the release mechanism of solute molecules from polymer matrix. A new equation was developed for the boundary condition. Total solute release was quantified in terms of diffusion and erosion contributions. Results from the slab geometry reflect the results observed during the experimental analysis of drug release from Pluronic hydrogels.
