Abstract

The model proposed in Lin, Drury, Karwan, & Paquet (2009) was only tested against published data, limiting model validation. The purpose of the current pilot study was to validate the application of the general model for modeling Fitts' law in three designed experiments. Four graduate students participated in the experiments to measure their (1) ballistic movement time and variability, (2) the relationship between movement time and index of difficulty, and (3) the relationship between the number of ballistic movements and index of difficulty. The motor properties measured in the first experiment were utilized by our proposed general model to predict the individuals' relationships measured in the last two experiments. The comparisons of the experimental and the predicted relationships showed that the designed experiments were a feasible basis for further model validation. Some experimental modifications will be required for future research.
