Abstract

The cable-stayed Shipshaw bridge, which crosses the Saguenay river near Jonquiere, Quebec, suffered structural damage during the November 25, 1988 Saguenay earthquake (ML =6.0). One of four anchorage plates connecting the steel nox girders to one abutment failed due to the ground shaking. This paper compares the results of the modal analysis and testing conducted to determine the dynamic properties of the bridge. This comparison validated the dynamic model of the bridge used in a time-step analysis to explain the cause of failure. Measured natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with the corresponding computed values. The paper also includes a description of the in-situ vibrations measurements in which a 44 ton truck travelling on the bridge was used as dynamic excitation.
