Abstract

Ceramic-polymer 0-3 nanocomposites, in which nanosized Ba 0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) powders were used as ceramic filler and P(VDF-CTFE) 88/12 mol% copolymer was used as matrix, were prepared and characterized over a concentration range from 0 to 40 vol.% of BST powders. It is found that the wetablity between the P(VDF-CTFE) copolymer and BST powders is poor, which results in poor uniformity in the as-cast composite film. Processes to modify the uniformity of the composites were investigated. It is found that the uniformity of the composite can be improved by hot pressing multilayers of the as-cast composite films. Functionalized silane was also used as agent to chemically treat the surface of BST powders. It is found that the silane coupling agent can significantly improve the connection between the BST powders and P(VDF-CTFE) copolymer matrix as reflected by a better uniformity observed in the as-cast composites.
