Abstract
The effects of friction stir welds (FSW) and post-weld aging on the microstructure and hardness of wrought aluminum alloys 7050-T74 and C458-T3 were discussed. PLate forms of C458-T3 and 7050-T7451 were friction stir welded using parameters used for wrought aluminum alloys. Results show that the heat affected zone (HAZ) extended to about 1 in. on either side of the center of the weld, with the minimum in hardness occuring at about 0.5 in. on either side of the weld center. The observed dislocation configurations suggested that the deformation during FSW was similar to combined shock processing and creep.
