Abstract
We investigated the solvent and solute diffusion, as well as the polymer swelling and dissolution in gels formed by Poloxamer poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) block copolymers. The gel microstructure consists of self-assembled spheres, cylinders, or lamellae, depending on the Poloxamer molecular characteristics and concentration. Poloxamer and water were brought in contact, and the time evolution of the different structures was monitored. The diffusion equations were formulated and analytical solutions were obtained that yielded (i) the solvent and solute diffusion coefficients in the different ordered structures and (ii) the polymer dissolution rate. The information thus obtained is important in the design of controlled release systems based on microstructured block copolymers.
