Abstract
This article presents a preliminary description of the Late Antique settlement recently discovered on the hill of Scoglietto in the territory of Alberese (Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy). Archaeological excavations in fact revealed a circular semi-excavated hut made of rammed earth which was built over the ruins of a temple of the age of Severus. The dwelling can be dated to between the 5th and the middle of the 6th century when the entire site was destroyed by a fire. Besides presenting the stratigraphic data and the pottery, this article attempts to give a general overview of the territory of Alberese in the Late Antique period using excavation data and the numerous territorial surveys conducted in this area in the 1970s. The authors also focus on the residential and settlement types used on the promontory of Scoglietto based on information derived from the Cave of Scoglietto located beneath it, where enormous quantities of pottery and Late Antique coins were found. The cave and the settlement of Scoglietto in fact have a phase in common which future archaeological research should allow us to define in detail thanks also to the other key sites here which have been recently investigated.
