Loading rate effects and influence of floor slab on the seismic performance of RBS connections for steel moment resisting frames

Abstract

This paper presents the results of six full scale tests performed on Reduced Beam Section (RBS) welded exterior beam-to-column connections for steel moment resisting frames. Six identical specimens were tested. Different loading histories were applied. Two specimens included a concrete floor slab with special detailing aiming at isolating the slab from the steel framing at the joint. All specimens exhibited a very satisfactory performance under the various loading conditions. The results indicate that quasi-static cyclic testing is more appropriate than a push-over test to predict the performance of RBS joints under severe ground motions. No strain rate effects were observed in the tests. The proposed slab detailing reduced significantly the effects of the floor slab.
