abstract = "Excess permanganate requirements have been observed during field applications of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using permanganate ion (MnO4-). A portion of this excess has been attributed to consumption by reduced species in the surrounding aquifer material, commonly referred to as Natural Oxidant Demand (NOD). Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the kinetics of the NOD reactions in a sandy aquifer material. Batch tests showed a maximum possible NOD of greater than 0.8 g KMnO4/kg of aquifer material that was not reached after a 4 week time period. Column tests showed that significant breakthrough of aqueous KMnO 4 occurred after an average NOD of only 0.34 g/kg was reached. This result was attributed to a slow NOD reaction. The identification of possible slow NOD kinetics affects the application strategy during ISCO and impacts the approach used in bench scale testing.",
