INTRODUCTION: Insurgent Urbanisms

This book explores insurgent urbanisms, focusing on the efforts of marginalized communities to not only resist but also transform the injustices woven into urban environments. Insurgent urbanism tends to emerge in the gaps left by earlier rights-based movements shaped by capitalist systems, evolving in response to the growing inequalities fueled by neoliberal urban policies and redevelopment pressures. What can the evolutionary trajectory of insurgency reveal about a socially just future? The chapters in this volume provide the greater empirical specificity needed to explore that question. The introduction gives an overview of each chapter and the editors’ approach to the book.
