Abstract

In March of 2022, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence held a series of Spring Symposia. One of those symposia was titled “Putting AI in the Critical Loop.” Following recent traditions for these symposia, the proceedings of the meetings have been published in book form. This book is the instance of the proceedings for this particular symposium. Chapter 1 is an Introduction to these proceedings, describing the overall structure of the symposium and the contributing speakers and authors. This chapter also asserts that for human and AI agents to cooperate in complex environments, they must have a common understanding of the situational states in which they are operating.
