Abstract

This paper considers the international spread of theoretical archaeology. It examines the general processes that have defined the history of archaeology. Three questions are explored. What is the status of theoretical archaeology? Is its acceptance dependent upon geographic location? In what theoretical directions will it move in the 1980s? The paper shows that the status and acceptance are dependent upon geographic location and predicts that, as archaeology was processual in the 70’s, it will be operational in the 80’s.
