Abstract

Several studies have been conducted by industrial concerns to assess the biotreatability of high strength chemical wastes and/or leachates. Occidental Chemical has investigated the use of batch biological treatment prior to carbon adsorption for their Hyde Park leachate. Use of the combined treatment process produced a higher quality effluent at a lower overall cost. Carbon exhausting rates were reduced by greater than 90 percent. A chemical waste handler, CECOS International, recently constructed a full scale batch biological treatment system prior to an existing carbon adsorption process at their Niagara Falls site. This paper reviews the final treatment processes selected, and to suggest that intermittent biological treatment of hazardous wastes is a feasible cost effective treatment alternative to conventional physicochemical processes.
