Abstract

The increasing transmission speeds of computer networks has necessitated the reexamination of existing protocols to see if they are still effective for high speed networks. The problem of controlling congestion in high speed networks poses some special problems because the relatively long propagation delay causes feedback-based control to be slow and ineffective. To allow effective control of traffic we propose the use of predictive control schemes in which the control mechanism predicts the future system state based on current system state information. These predictions are then used to make control decisions. We examine the effectiveness of these schemes in controlling congestion; we also examine how two virtual circuits, each using the predictive control scheme, interact with one another.
