abstract = "The purpose of this paper is to address the relationship between CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings and the material control software. Computer generated drawings have the ability to hold information pertaining to the actual material requirements in the content of the drawing. This allows the extraction of this material information directly into the material control system. To accomplish this automatic material take-off, the user must be aware of several aspects of the process. The CAD system must be the first consideration. Different CAD vendors handle information in the drawing files in many ways. The amount of material information necessary to get a complete take-off is also important. How the information gets placed in the drawing or database will effect the amount of time savings that can be gained by using this type of material extraction. Different types of material control software will be discussed and the concepts of cataloging and spec checking will be addressed.",
