Abstract
The eventual development of smart structural systems will require well-designed computational support for the signal processing and diagnostic inferencing associated with multi-channel instrumented structures. This paper discusses knowledge modeling issues and requirements for a smart structural system, and a logic-based object-oriented information architecture for organizing and managing the data arising from an instrumented structure is presented. A neural network is employed within this information architecture for damage identification. The resulting software implementation is described and illustrated in the context of a laboratory case study of damage detection in a successively damaged steel truss structure.
