Abstract
The influence of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) desorption kinetics on the bioremediation and mobility risk of soil was studied. Biotreatment involved periodic tilling to enhance aeration, addition of growth nutrients, and maintaining the right moisture content in the soil. An initial fast desorption rate followed by a slow rate was observed for individual PCB homolog groups and for total PCBs. The initial rate of PCB desorption was faster for lower chlorinated homolog groups compared to the higher chlorinated groups. Simulation of PCB leaching in soil columns suggest that the reduction of fast desorbing PCB pool in soil with bioremediation may result in significant reduction in PCB leaching potential.
