Abstract

NewYork State installed its first fiber-reinforced-polymer (FRP)compositebridge inOctober 1998. Since FRPs are relatively new to such civil engineering applications, a comprehensive test program, comprising of load tests and visual inspections every six months, and detailed finite-element analysis were planned to monitor the structure and also to evaluate its long-term durability. This paper will describe the bridge design details, load testing procedures, and results from the first two load tests. The data presented in this paper can be used to refine the design of future FRP bridges.
