Developments in research and analysis techniques have been paralleled by significant improvements and refinements of device hardware. This paper provides a summary of two types of energy dissipation devices that have been studied experimentally and are in the process of being implemented in structures in the United States. These systems are now sufficiently well understood for them to be suitable for consideration if an energy-dissipation approach is to be used in new or retrofit design.",
