Abstract
To the Editor: In a recent issue of the Journal (March 26), Ambrosino et al.1 reported on a case characterized by selective absence of an antibody response to polysaccharide antigens, which caused recurrent sinopulmonary infections. As the authors state, the inability to produce an adequate immune response to polysaccharide antigens has also been observed in infants and young children. In addition, a similar inability and subsequent increased risk of overwhelming infections with polysaccharide-capsule–bearing bacteria has been observed in splenectomized patients.
