Abstract
The etiology of exacerbations is now better understood, with bacterial pathogens causing a significant proportion of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). An exacerbation is characterized by an increase in 1 or more of the following: dyspnea, sputum volume, or sputum purulence. AECOPD has a major impact on outcomes, as well as carries with it a heavy burden in terms of health care utilization and quality of life.
