Abstract
Ibuprofen is a common over-the-counter analgesic with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory properties. While most overdoses cause only mild gastrointestinal upset, massive overdoses (>200mgkg−1) can be life-threatening. Severe toxicity may present with altered mental status, metabolic acidosis, renal insufficiency or failure, and seizures. Ibuprofen also exhibits mitochondrial toxicity in massive overdose. Ibuprofen is often combined with other over-the-counter medications including antihistamines and decongestants; therefore, patients are at risk of developing multiple toxicities. Management of acute and chronic ibuprofen overdose is primarily supportive care.
