abstract = "The interaction of a high-power CO2 laser with a single water droplet of controllable size has been investigated. A very interesting enhancement of the transmission was observed before the onset of plasma formation. In addition, a temporal modulation of the laser pulse was also detected without measurable spatial deformation. The experiment was performed with a single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) CO2 laser. The aerosol particles were produced by a commercial generator. The energy transmittance of the laser as a function of intensity for 53-μm particles is shown and discussed. The observed reduction of the breakdown threshold from the clean air value of 6 GW/cm2 is rather small compared to other results. The difference is attributed to the controlled atmosphere and the use of an SLM laser. An increase in transmission between IE and IBD is attributed to explosion and disintegration of the aerosol droplet. The dynamic temporal behavior of the transmitted laser radiation shows breaking up of the laser pulse itself.",
