Abstract

The International Ergonomics Association (IEA)Technical Committee for HF/E and Sustainable Development was formed in 2009. This paper introduces some ideas on new roles and opportunities for the HF/E community related to Sustainable Development generally and climate change in particular. These include involvement in the design of: systems related to the transition to low carbon economies, decision support, distributed working, and transportation. We also offer a cautionary note that social responsibility and social life cycle analysis efforts may have unwanted exclusionary impacts. It concludes that the HF/E community is well equipped to play a valuable part, both in applying traditional skills to new industries, and in new roles in wider teams.
