Abstract
Golagros and Gawane is an anonymous Arthurian romance in alliterative, 13-line stanzaic metre, surviving in a single printing in a Middle Scots dialect. Gawain is featured in the poem's two incidents: he helps secure provisions from a fearsome lord, and then secures the good will of the independent lord Golagros by agreeing to pretend to have been defeated by him. While there is scholarly debate about whether the romance is emphatically Scottish or rather the product of a broader Anglo-Scottish borderlands culture, critics agree that it is a sophisticated poem that meditates on profound ethical issues.
