Gender bias in American Academy of Neurology recognition awards?

National awards are a recognition of achievement, a source of prestige, and are used to promote advancement in medicine. In this issue of Neurology®, Silver et al. 1 report gender disparity in the number of women selected for American Academy of Neurology (AAN) awards, especially more pronounced for more prestigious awards. Recent publications on pay and advancements further demonstrate bias in advancement of women in the higher ranks of Neurology. Close to home, one of the most highly visible senior Neurology positions, President of the AAN, has only been held by one woman, Dr. Olson in 2001-2003.
