Abstract
A theory is developed for the magnetic field substates of the e1-hh1, and e2-hh2 excitons of a GaAsAlAs quantum well. The theory accounts for the Coulomb potential between the electron and hole, the magnetic field, and the finite width of the quantum well. These results are compared to a direct reflectivity experiment where several magnetic substates of the e1-hh1 and e2-hh2 excitons are observed. The binding energy and diamagnetic shift agree well for e1-hh1, but a significant discrepancy is noted for e2-hh2. The discrepancy is interpreted in terms of a need for a more complete band structure theory.
