Abstract
Experimental results from full-scale testing of full and partial penetration butt-welded splices of ASTM A6 Group 4 and 5 heavy-rolled sections are presented. Welded splices of the test specimens were subjected to primary tensile stresses as induced by pure bending. The partial penetration splice failed in a brittle manner with no apparent ductility. However, it was able to develop and exceed its nominal capacity. Qualitative explanations are given as to the cause of the observed failure. The splice with full penetration welds exhibited satisfactory strength and ductility. It is believed that a great amount of care must be taken in the execution of this weld type. Future research needs are examined.
