Abstract
The damping effect in a general MDOF system consists of energy dissipation and energy transformation. According to a complex damping theory, the effect can be analyzed by introducing the concepts of complex damping ratio, modal energy, and modal energy transformation. In this paper, we discuss some mathematical results developed from the basic complex damping theory. Some of these results provide a new criterion for determining a complete set of normal modes.
