Abstract

Many nonlinear structures or structures with nonlinear base isolation systems can be modeled by bi-linear systems. Namely, the relationship between the load and deformation can be represented by a parallelogram. In earthquake engineering as well as in other fields that involve structural dynamics, the systems need to be described by linearized parameters such as effective stiffness, etc. The effective stiffness, traditionally defined by the diagonal of the parallelogram, can be estimated notably larger. In this paper, we discuss a new method to measure the effective stiffness and period for bi-linear structures.
