Abstract
An experimental study to explore and investigate the seismic performance of an isolation system consisting of bearings with a spherical ball rolling in conical steel plates was performed. Earthquake simulator tests were performed on a bridge model with this isolation system coupled with supplemental friction dampers and the results were compared to a similar non-isolated bridge test conducted previously. Experimental results show that this system can reduce superstructure accelerations and substructure forces. Different aspects pertaining to these bearings such as the hardness of metal that are in contact, the effect of imperfect placement of the ball etc. were addressed and examined in the study. Some key issues on material compatibility and construction tolerances need to be further evaluated and resolved.
