Abstract
The collection efficiencies for small droplets, with radius ranging from 1.4 to 8.0 μm, of 0.7 μm radius Escherichia coli bacterial particles, are investigated experimentally. The water droplets are produced in a cylindrical chamber 150 ft3 in volume by adiabatic cooling. The size distribution histograms are determined by direct microscopic measurements on gelatin-coated glass slides, while the collection efficiency is determined by direct observation on agar-coated slides. Measured collection efficiencies agree well with those predicted by interception theory but are higher than the published theoretical collision efficiencies.
