Abstract

A new method has been developed for the reversible removal of excess oxygen atoms or holes in the Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O type of superconductor without altering its general lattice structure. It has been found by this method that changes in Tc and Raman spectrum of the superconductor can be simply correlated with the concentration of excess oxygen and that a 634 cm-1 phonon is closely associated with the superconducting holes. Replacement of 16O by 18O atoms at the holes causes a 3.6% decrease in the frequency of this phonon without a similar change in Tc. With these new results as supporting evidence, a least vibration model of superconductivity is suggested.
