Effects of transplant rejection on the electrogram: Computer simulations and rat studies

Abstract

A heterotopic rat heart model was used to test computer simulation predictions of the changes in the intrinsic and paced electrogram waveforms during transplant rejection. Transplant rejection was modeled by an increase in the cell-to-cell coupling resistance. In both the computer simulations and the rat model, transplant rejection significantly decreased the intrinsic electrogram amplitude and paced electrogram maximum negative potential, paced depolarization integral, and T-wave amplitude. Thus, both the paced and the intrinsic electrogram waveforms have the potential of supplying a noninvasive indication of transplant rejection.
