Abstract

Recently, several bacterial strains have been discovered and isolated from various hazardous waste landfills. Because these newly isolated bacteria have developed the ability to metabolize certain persistent organics as sole carbon and energy sources, it has been hypothesized that addition of these bacteria to waste treatment facilities may improve biodegradation efficiency of these persistent organics. To study the potential of using these new bacteria to enhance treatment process efficiency, a research program was initiated by the Department of Civil Engineering, State University of New York at Buffalo. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of this experimental study.
