Abstract

Raman shifting in methane generates nanosecond radiation at 3 μm by 2nd Stokes scattering of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. In a gas cell of 80 cm length, the conversion efficiency at 3 μm was increased to 8% by the use of a capillary. This efficiency corresponds to an energy of 20 mJ of 3 μm radiation with 260 mJ at 1.06 μm pump energy.
