Abstract

The viscosity of thermoplastics above Tg was found to greatly affect the electrical properties of conducting thermoplastic composites, while the mechanical properties are essentially not affected. The electrical resistivity decreases and the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness increases with increasing viscosity, as shown by using the same filler (namely nickel particles or fibers) in polyimidesiloxane and polyether sulfone. This effect is attributed to the flow of the low viscosity thermoplastic during composite fabrication tending to disturb the connectivity of the filler particles or fibers achieved prior to heating.
