title = "Effect of spatial variations in subgrade stiffness on pavement performance",
abstract = "Subgrade stiffness plays an important role in defining the overall behavior of flexible pavements. This has been commonly addressed in flexible pavement design through the use of average stiffness values to characterize the behavior of in-situ soil properties without much attention to the variability in this key input parameter. This paper utilizes probabilistic modeling techniques to describe the spatial variability in subgrade stiffness, and mechanistic modeling techniques to investigate its effect on pavement performance. The former is defined using a normal distribution, while the latter is accomplished using three-dimensional finite element models that simulate the behavior of the layered pavement structure.",
