Abstract

Chronic venous disease (CVD) is experienced by 20 million persons in the United States and approximately 5% of the worldwide population. 1, 2 Prevalence is increasing, with a 33.1% increase in venous thromboembolism (VTE) between 2002 and 2006 and current annual estimates at more than 20,000 new cases of venous ulcers. 3, 4 Etiologies are multifactorial, possibly due to advancing age and increasing obesity rates. CVD is costly, requiring up to 2% of health care budgets in Western countries.
