Abstract
Dextran and dextran derivatives are widely used in solution toprovide structure and function, e.g., colloidal stability, delivery of actives, viscoelasticity, to a variety of products. Underlying these functions areinter- and intra-molecular interactions that depend on the molecularcharacteristics of dextran (molecular weight, architecture, chemicalmodifications) and the type of solvent used (typically water, but mayinclude salts, solutes and/or organic solvents). The conformation insolution of dextran-based polymers is reviewed, with an emphasis ofrelating fundamental information obtained at the molecular level to theproperties of dextran solutions that render dextran such an attractiveexcipient in diverse formulations.
