Abstract

In this paper, we present the current levels of performance of our computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) schemes for detection of various abnormalities in chest radiographs and mammograms. Here, CAD refers to a diagnosis made by a radiologist who utilizes the results of computerized analyses of radiographic images as a "second opinion". The aim of CAD is to improve diagnostic accuracy by reducing the number of missed diagnoses. Our presentation includes (1) a high-speed computer system with a laser film digitizer for "real-time" calculation of CAD output, and (2) a six-monitor viewstation for review of computer output. CAD schemes include (1) the detection of lung nodules, interstitial infiltrates, cardiomegaly, and pneumothorax in chest radiography; (2) the identification of masses and clustered microcalcifications in mammography; and (3) the assessment of stenotic lesions in angiogmphy.
