Abstract
A new approach is employed to determine the value of the valence band offset Vp at a HgTe/CdTe heterojunction. The values of the energy difference ΔE between the first two valence subbands - namely the first heavy hole subband and the first light hole subband - at the Brillouin zone center of two HgTe/CdTe superlattices are obtained from the results of far-infrared magnetooptical measurements. The values of ΔE for the two superlattices are then compared with theoretical calculations, using Vp as the only fitting parameter. A single value of Vp = 63 ± 13 meV is found which fits the values of ΔE for both superlattices.
